How Long Do Solar Panels Last?

How Long Do Solar Panels Last?

A solar system is a long-term investment, so it’s natural to ask how long it will continue to work. The honest answer is that it depends on which part of the system you’re asking about. The panels themselves are built to last for decades, but other components, particularly the inverter, usually don’t last as long.

The Short Answer

According to the Energy Saving Trust, solar panels should last 25 years or more. Many manufacturers back their panels with performance warranties of around 25 to 30 years, but a warranty period isn’t the same thing as a lifespan. Panels don’t suddenly stop at the end of a warranty. They normally continue generating, with output gradually declining over time.

How Long Do the Other Parts of the System Last?

A solar system is more than panels, and the other components follow their own timelines:

  • Inverter: The inverter does the daily work of converting the DC electricity from your panels into AC for your home, and it’s usually the first major component to need attention. The Energy Saving Trust suggests planning for a replacement at around 12 years. String inverters are commonly quoted at 10 to 15 years, and microinverters or optimisers are often built to last longer, with manufacturer warranties that can run well beyond those of a standard string inverter. The exact figure depends on the make and model, so check your own warranty paperwork. Our guide to what a solar inverter is and how it works explains why this part works so hard.
  • Battery storage: If you have battery storage, the battery has its own lifespan and warranty, set by the manufacturer. Check the paperwork for your specific unit.
  • Mounting, cabling, and connectors: These are generally long-lasting, but they’re exposed to weather and can wear out or come loose over time, which is one reason periodic inspection matters.

Do Solar Panels Stop Working After 25 Years?

No. The Energy Saving Trust’s guidance is that panels should last 25 years or more, and the 25-year figure often quoted in warranties is a guarantee period, not a cut-off. What you should expect is a small drop in output each year as the panels age, rather than a sudden failure.

What Affects How Long a System Lasts?

Two systems installed on the same day can age quite differently. The main factors are:

  • Equipment and installation quality: Good components, fitted correctly, make a real difference to long-term reliability.
  • Local conditions: Exposure to coastal air, heavy weather, nearby trees or farmland can all affect how a system ages.
  • Dirt and debris Buildup can reduce the amount of light reaching the cells, so periodic cleaning helps maintain performance.
  • Pests and nesting: Birds nesting under panels can damage wiring and cause problems that aren’t visible from the ground. Bird proofing deals with this at the source.
  • Inverter environment: Inverters need adequate ventilation and are sensitive to heat and moisture.
  • Maintenance: Small faults caught early are usually easier to put right than ones left to develop.

How Servicing Helps

No one can guarantee a specific lifespan for a solar system, but regular checks give small problems less time to become big ones. A proper service will typically look at the panels, mounting, wiring and inverter, and give you a record of how the system is performing. That’s the thinking behind our solar panel maintenance service, and it also leaves you with a clear paper trail if you ever need to refer to your warranty.

Signs a Component May Be Reaching the End of Its Life

  • Your generation has dropped, and you can’t find an obvious cause
  • The inverter keeps showing faults or shutting down
  • Unusual noises from the inverter
  • A blank inverter display
  • Visible damage to panels, cables or connectors

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth having the system checked. A solar PV repair diagnosis will tell you whether it’s a minor fix or a part that needs replacing.
